A seasonal forecast is not a local warning

WMO’s autumn 2026 seasonal update describes large-scale ocean conditions expected to influence the coming months.

Seasonal models consider probabilities across a period. Local warnings address a more immediate hazard in a specified area. Confusing these products can lead to the wrong decision, such as assuming an unusually dry seasonal outlook rules out a dangerous short episode of heavy rain.

Check three labels

Find the issue date, validity period and geographic area. Then read whether the graphic shows a forecast value, a probability or a departure from an average. Colors alone do not tell you the severity of an impact or the action recommended by local authorities.

Create an information routine

Save official local alert channels and review how your household or organization will receive updates if normal communications fail. A broader outlook can motivate preparation, while a warning should guide immediate decisions. Always use the most recent local instructions when conditions become hazardous.
